Common Cell Phone Tasks:
Here
you will find tutorials on common tasks such as disabling the ringer and
adding a phone number to an address book for the cell phones we've reviewed.
Certain features, like these, can make or break the simplicity of using
a cell phone.
One
should note that many of the keys listed in these tasks are "soft
keys". That means they are choices which appear on-screen. They are
selected by choosing the "hard key" or the actual button directly
below the screen choice.

Nokia
6102: Turning
on and off the ringer:
- Press the Go
To key.
- Press Down four
times on the control pad until “Silent” is highlighted.
- Press the Select
key. The display will read “Activated Profile: Silent.”
- To turn the ringer
back on, press the Go To key. Press Down on the control pad three times
until “Normal” is highlighted, and press the Select key.
Nokia
6102:
Adding a contact to the address book:
- Press the Names
key to enter the address book.
- Press the Options
key.
- Press Down once
on the control pad to highlight “Add New Contact.”
- Press the Select
key.
- Enter in the
contact’s name using the key pad.
- Press OK when
finished.
- Enter in the
contact’s phone number using the key pad.
- Press OK when
finished. The display will read “Saved To Phone Memory.”
- To add additional
phone numbers, you’ll need to create a second contact entry for
that person, such as “John Work” or “John Home.”
Sony
Ericsson Z520a: Turning on and off the ringer:
- Press and hold
the # key for one second. The phone display will then read “Silent
Mode On.”
- To exit Silent
mode, press and hold the # key again for one second. The display won’t
say anything this time, but the small Silent icon at the top of the
screen will disappear.
Sony Ericsson
Z520a: Adding a contact to the address book:
- Press the Menu
key.
- Press Down to
highlight the Contacts icon.
- Press the Select
key.
- Press Down once
to highlight “New Contact.”
- Press the Add
key.
- Press the center
of the control pad, and then enter in the name of the contact using
the key pad.
- Press OK.
- Press the center
of the control pad, and then enter in the contact’s phone number
using the key pad.
- Press OK.
- To add additional
numbers, press the Add key and enter in each phone number.
- When finished,
press the Save key. The display will show the name of the contact and
read “Contact Saved.”

Vision Phone A900 by Samsung: Turning on and off the ringer:
- Press the external
Volume Down key multiple times. After reducing the volume level (3,
2, 1, etc.) you’ll scroll through 1-Beep, Ringer Off, Vibrate
All, and finally, Silence All mode.
- To turn the ringer
back on, begin pressing the Volume Up key multiple times until you reach
the desired setting.
Sprint Power
Vision Phone A900 by Samsung: Adding a contact to the address book:
- Press the Contacts
key.
- If you’ve
added contacts before, it will list them; press Add New to enter in
a new one. If this is the first contact you’ve added to the phone,
it will automatically let you start entering in the first contact name
without having to press Add New first.
- Enter in the
name of the contact using the key pad.
- Press OK when
done.
- Press Down on
the control pad to highlight “Add Number.”
- Enter in the
name of the contact using the key pad.
- Using the control
pad, choose the kind of number (Mobile, Home, Office, etc.) from the
list.
- Press OK when
done.
- If desired, scroll
down to the additional fields to select a ringer, add a URL or e-mail
address.
- When finished,
press Done. The display will read “Entry has been saved.”
Sprint
PCS Vision Picture Phone LX350 by LG: Turning on and off the ringer:
- Press the external
Volume Down key multiple times. After reducing the volume level (Medium,
Medium Low, Low, etc.) you’ll scroll through Vibrate, Ringer Off,
and, finally, Silence All mode.
- To turn the ringer
back on, begin pressing the Volume Up key multiple times until you reach
the desired setting.
Sprint PCS
Vision Picture Phone LX350 by LG: Adding a contact to the address book:
- Press the Contacts
key.
- Press OK to enter
a new contact.
- Press OK and
enter in the name of the contact using the key pad.
- Press OK when
done.
- Press Down on
the control pad to highlight “Add Number.”
- Press OK and
enter in the name of the contact using the key pad.
- Using the control
pad, choose the kind of number (Mobile, Home, Office, etc.) from the
list.
- Press OK when
done.
- If desired, scroll
down to the additional fields to choose the ringer (currently labeled
“Default”), add a memo, add a web site URL, or add an e-mail
address.
- When finished,
press Done. The display will read “Entry has been saved.”

U6 PEBL: Turning on and off the ringer:
- Press the external

Motorola
U6 PEBL: Adding an entry to the address book:
- Press the center
control pad button to enter the main menu.
- Press Down on
the control pad to move the cursor to Phone Book.
- Press the Select
key.
- Press the top
center soft key to enter the Phone book menu.
- Press the Select
key to choose the first option: “New.”
- Press the Select
key to choose “Phone Number.”
- Enter in the
name of the contact using the keypad. Press OK when done.
- Enter in the
phone number using the keypad. Press OK when done.
- If desired, set
where to store the contact (either to the SIM card or internally), and
set the Speed Dial key.
- Press Done to
store the contact.
- If you want to
enter an additional phone number, you have to create a second entry
and name it differently than the first. For example: “Bob Home”
or “Bob Work.”
Samsung T609:
Turning on and off the ringer:
- Press and hold
the # key for one second. The phone display will then read “Silent
Mode.”
- To exit Silent
mode, press and hold the # key again for one second. The display will
read “Exit Silent Mode.”
Samsung
T609: Adding a contact to the address book:
- Press the Menu
key.
- Press Down to
highlight the Phone Book icon.
- Press the Select
key.
- Press the Select
key again to choose “Add New Contact.”
- Enter in the
first and last name of the contact using the key pad.
- Enter in the
first phone number of the contact.
- If desired, fill
in the additional fields (Fax, email, Ring Tone, etc.).
- When finished,
press the Save key to save the contact.
Verizon:
Motorola
RAZR V3c: Turning on and off the ringer:
- Press the external
Volume Down key multiple times. After reducing the volume (Medium, Medium
Low, Low, etc.) you’ll be able to scroll through Vibrate, Alarm
Only, and All Off (Silent Mode).
- To turn the ringer
back on, begin pressing the Volume Up key multiple times until you reach
the desired setting.
Motorola
RAZR V3c: Adding an entry to the address book:
- Press the center
control pad button to enter the Menu.
- Press the center
control pad button again to add a new contact.
- Enter in the
name.
- Press Down on
the control pad.
- Enter in the
phone number.
- Continue pressing
down and entering in other fields (Home, Work, Ringer type for this
contact, and so on) if desired.
- When finished,
press the center control pad button.
- The display will
read “CONTACT SAVED.”
LG VX5200: Turning
on and off the ringer:
- Press the external Volume
Down key multiple times. After reducing the volume (Medium, Medium Low,
Low, etc.) you’ll be able to scroll through Vibrate, Alarm Only,
and Sounds Off.
- To turn the ringer back
on, begin pressing the Volume Up key multiple times until you reach
the desired setting.
LG VX5200: Adding
an entry to the address book:
- Press the OK button to
enter the Menu.
- Press the OK button again
to add a new contact.
- Enter in the name.
- Press Down on the control
pad.
- Enter in the phone number.
- Continue pressing down
and entering in other fields (Home, Work, Ringer type for this contact,
and so on) if desired.
- When finished, press the
OK button.
- The display will read “CONTACT
SAVED.”
